What does BMI mean?

BMI is calculated by dividing weight in kg by the square of height in metres. Used as a health indicator in population screening.

A BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is considered normal. Below 18.5: underweight. 25–29.9: overweight. 30+: obesity.

Important: BMI does not distinguish between muscle and fat mass. An athlete may have a high BMI while being in excellent health.

FAQ about BMI

How is BMI calculated?

BMI is calculated by dividing weight (kg) by height squared (m): BMI = weight / height². For example, 75 kg and 175 cm: 75 / (1.75)² = 24.5.

What is a normal BMI for an adult?

The WHO classifies BMI < 18.5 as underweight, 18.5–24.9 as normal, 25–29.9 as overweight, ≥ 30 as obese (with classes I, II, III by degree).

Is BMI reliable for athletes?

No, BMI does not distinguish between muscle and fat mass. An athlete with high muscle mass may appear overweight despite having a low body fat percentage.

Should I use BMI to set weight goals?

BMI is a starting point, not a precise goal. For realistic weight targets, also consider waist circumference, body composition, and medical history.

Is the BMI calculation different for men and women?

The formula is the same, but men and women tend to have different body fat distributions. Some clinical guidelines use slightly different ranges by sex and ethnic group.
