On nutrition forums you'll constantly see questions like "should I eat my BMR or my TDEE?". It's a common mix-up and clearing it up changes how you think about your diet. Spoiler: you never eat at BMR.
This guide breaks down the two metrics, when to use which, and why both are estimates — not measurements.
BMR: the floor of your metabolism
BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) is the energy your body uses in complete rest, under tightly defined conditions: awake but motionless, on an empty stomach for at least 12 hours, in a thermoneutral environment, after a full night's sleep.
Practically it's the cost of staying alive: heart, breathing, body temperature, brain function, organ activity. No movement, no active digestion, no thermogenesis from cold or heat.
The formula
BMR (men) = (10 × weight kg) + (6.25 × height cm) − (5 × age) + 5
BMR (women) = (10 × weight kg) + (6.25 × height cm) − (5 × age) − 161
This is Mifflin-St Jeor (1990), today's clinical standard because it has lower error than alternatives (Harris-Benedict, Schofield, and Cunningham for non-athletes).
Example
Sarah, 28, 60 kg (132 lb), 168 cm (5'6"):
BMR = (10 × 60) + (6.25 × 168) − (5 × 28) − 161
= 600 + 1050 − 140 − 161
= 1349 kcal/day
Sarah's BMR is roughly 1,350 kcal. Even staying in bed all day, she'd consume that.
TDEE: what you actually burn
TDEE (Total Daily Energy Expenditure) is the real calorie need for an active person. You compute it by multiplying BMR by an activity factor that captures everything BMR excludes:
- NEAT (Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis): walking, climbing stairs, gesturing, washing dishes.
- EAT (Exercise Activity Thermogenesis): intentional training.
- TEF (Thermic Effect of Food): the energy spent digesting food, ~10% of total intake.

Sarah does CrossFit 4×/week and walks an hour daily — moderate.
TDEE = 1349 × 1.55 = 2091 kcal/day
To maintain weight, Sarah eats around 2,100 kcal. To lose 0.5 kg/week, she subtracts 15-20%: 1,700-1,800 kcal.
When to use BMR vs TDEE

Never eat at BMR to lose fat. It's a frequent mistake: "I'm a woman, BMR 1,300, I eat 1,300, fast results". Yes, fast results — but also muscle, energy and the ability to keep what you lost. You're creating a 35-40% deficit on real TDEE, well beyond the sustainable threshold.
The limits of these formulas
Both BMR and TDEE from formulas are predictive estimates. They work for the general population but have blind spots:
- Athletes with high lean mass → BMR underestimated (the formula doesn't see the extra muscle).
- People with high body fat → BMR overestimated (Mifflin assumes average composition).
- People in chronic deficit → real TDEE lower than calculated (metabolic adaptation).
- Women across the cycle → BMR shifts of 100-200 kcal (rarely captured).
Typical error margin: ±10-15%. For Sarah, real TDEE could be anywhere from 1,800 to 2,400 kcal. That's why you always need a 2-3 week calibration phase.
The real measurement: indirect calorimetry
The only way to measure (not estimate) BMR and TDEE is indirect calorimetry. You breathe into a mask or sit in a metabolic chamber that measures O₂ consumed and CO₂ produced. From those it computes real expenditure.
Pros: ±2-3% accuracy. Cons: needs a lab, costs €80-200 per session, has to be repeated when weight or activity change. Not practical for 99% of people — that's why only pro athletes, patients with metabolic disorders and research studies use it.
For everyone else, a well-applied formula + 2-3 weeks of calibration + serious tracking = accurate enough to make decisions.
Bottom line
- BMR = what you burn at rest. It's not an intake target, it's just one component.
- TDEE = the real maintenance you use to set diet, deficit, surplus.
- Formulas err by 10-15% — calibrate against your real data over 2-3 weeks.
- Never eat at BMR. Ever.
